SKF pioneered the first hubs with integral electronic sensors, called "smart hubs". Hubs of today can evaluate noise and vibration levels, monitor wheel end temperature and measure vehicle load.
Some features to consider in the SKF VSM hub unit offerings are functionally integrated wheel bearing solutions, compactness, reduced weight, easier assembly and overall cost reductions.
The SKF Hub unit 3 used mainly for front wheel driven vehicles is a fully integrated wheel bearing system where both inner and outer rings have flanges. The inner ring flange has threaded holes and the other ring flange is bolted to the suspension so it becomes a structural element of the suspension. It comes with an integrated ABS sensor, offers maximised dynamic load capacity and is greased and sealed for life.
The hub unit 3 makes a major contribution to lowering weight and cost of the total suspension assembly and improves suspension design and reduces overall number of components, which is cost saving in assembly, handling and storage.

Description of failure
Bearing noisy with, in severe cases, damage to raceways. Lubrication failure - denatured grease with red rust
colouration.
Root cause
Seal damage or fitting errors, resulting in water ingress into the bearing and consequent rust. May be worsened by pressure washing or excessive exposure to water
(eg. wading).
Preventive of action
Protection of the bearings and seals during mounting operations. Use the right tools and follow the correct procedure.
Avoid direct exposure of the bearing to water under pressure.
Evidence
Red rust in the grease and on the component surfaces.

The truck hub units offer some specific advantages such as at brake inspection, the SKF Truck Hub unit is lifted off and later put back in place. No need for dismounting and re-greasing as before.
The truck hub unit is based on a double row taper roller bearing with a common outer ring. The outer ring flange is optional. No additional adjustments are required when mounting. Integral seals ensure that the bearing surfaces are kept free from dirt particles - a very important factor in attaining maximum life of the bearings. The SKF Truck Hub Unit is dimensioned to cope the severest stress conditions. This means that the most advanced calculation programs have been used in both the bearing design and selection of
materials.
The SKF Truck Hub units
- Utilize forged bearing quality steel that is specially heat treated to meet the demands of heavy truck applications.
- Use custom designed seals that run directly on the ground bearing surface creating an ideal environment for seal performance.
- Use raceway profiles, roller contours and surface finishes, developed specifically for the demands of the application.
- Seal material has been specially chosen on account of its exceptional resistance to wear and temperature variations
- The special logarithmic profile of the raceways ensures efficient use of the contact area under the variety of load conditions applied to the wheel
bearing.
